TL;DR

Vercel Sandbox provides isolated Firecracker microVM environments for running AI-generated, user-submitted, or otherwise untrusted code. It is designed for AI-agent platforms, coding tools, app builders, developer infrastructure, and Vercel customers that need managed secure execution. Its key differentiator is the combination of Vercel-native SDKs, persistent and snapshot-capable environments, and Active CPU billing that excludes CPU time spent waiting on I/O or model responses.

Our Take

Vercel Sandbox occupies a strong position in the emerging secure code-execution and agent-runtime market. It is more capable than a conventional serverless function because it provides a fuller Linux environment in which applications can install packages, run commands, access files, launch development servers, and execute workloads that would be inappropriate or impractical inside a short-lived function. It is also distinct from an online IDE because its primary role is programmable infrastructure for applications and agents. Its main strength is operational simplicity. Developers can use Vercel’s SDKs and CLI instead of building their own VM scheduler, lifecycle manager, isolation layer, snapshot system, and regional placement logic. Firecracker isolation, custom images, persistence, snapshots, exposed ports, and multi-agent support make the product suitable for coding agents, AI app builders, automated testing, code evaluation, and user-submitted code. The Active CPU billing model is well matched to many agent workloads. Agents can spend substantial time waiting for model responses, APIs, package downloads, or other I/O, and Vercel excludes the waiting portion from CPU billing. However, memory remains billable while the sandbox is provisioned, and total costs can become difficult to forecast when workloads use large memory allocations, long sessions, storage, snapshots, or outbound traffic. Vercel Sandbox is best suited to teams building AI-agent products, secure code interpreters, generated-application platforms, developer tools, and automated execution pipelines—especially teams already using Vercel. It is less compelling for basic web hosting, ordinary background jobs, persistent application servers, or interactive browser IDEs. Buyers should validate cold starts, regional availability, persistence behavior, networking, quotas, and cost with representative workloads before adopting it at scale.

Pros

  • + Strong Firecracker microVM isolation for untrusted, user-generated, and agent-generated code.
  • + Well aligned with AI-agent workloads through command execution, file access, previews, custom images, snapshots, and persistent environments.
  • + Active CPU billing can be attractive for I/O-heavy workloads that spend significant time waiting on models or external services.
  • + Vercel-native JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and CLI interfaces reduce the operational burden of building a sandbox fleet.
  • + Persistence, snapshots, regional execution, and multi-agent features support more sophisticated development and automation workflows.

Cons

  • - Independent customer-review coverage dedicated specifically to Vercel Sandbox is limited.
  • - Usage-based pricing can be complex and may become expensive for memory-heavy, long-running, storage-intensive, or high-network workloads.
  • - The product does not provide a complete agent platform; orchestration, credentials, application state, observability, and user experience remain customer responsibilities.
  • - Durable or shared state may require Drives, object storage, databases, or another external persistence layer.
  • - Resource limits, session durations, concurrency limits, and plan-specific quotas require careful capacity and cost planning.
